Plumbing in La Vista: what’s local

La Vista is on MUD water, but its city code sets its own rules for the sewer line to your house, where sump and foundation drain water may go, and how plumbers get licensed in town.

Water

MUD water, about 9 to 10 grains hard

La Vista gets its drinking water from the Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD). MUD lime-softens it to about 10 grains per gallon; its 2025 water quality report gives an average of 9 (range 8 to 13). Those are figures for MUD’s whole system, not a test of La Vista taps. MUD says the property owner owns and maintains the water service line into the house.

Your sewer line

Yours up to the main

La Vista’s code makes the owner responsible for the sewer connection line, including the parts on public property or easements, up to and including where it joins the public main.

Sump water

No sump water in the sewer

La Vista’s code bans sending groundwater, runoff or subsurface drainage, including interior and exterior foundation drains, into the sanitary sewer. A sump pump has to discharge somewhere else.

Permits

Permits for replacements, too

La Vista requires plumbing permits for new installations, replacements and removal of plumbing fixtures and water, drainage, sewer and gas piping. The city uses the 2018 International Codes, and its fee schedule lists water heaters, sewer repair, underground sprinklers and backflow preventers. Building Department: 402-593-6400.

Licensing

La Vista licenses its plumbers

To get a La Vista plumbing license (master, journeyman or apprentice), a plumber needs a current City of Omaha or City of Bellevue license in the same category, a $5,000 surety bond and liability insurance.

Sewer cleaning

Tell Public Works first

The city asks residents to notify Public Works (402-331-8927) when having home sewer lines professionally cleaned. It also notes that most insurance policies do not automatically cover sewer backup damage.
